AMN6400 Optical Transport Platform from Hitachi

AMN6400 Advanced Packet/Optical Transport Platform combines functions of SONET, DWDM, and packet systems in a single advanced network element

Hitachi Communication Technologies America, Inc. (Hitachi-CTA) today announced the AMN6400, the company’s next generation optical transport platform, based on a 100Gbps architecture. The AMN6400 Advanced Packet/Optical Transport Platform combines the functions of next generation SONET, DWDM and packet-based systems into a single platform, offering network operators a smooth transition from legacy circuit-switched networks to the packet-based environment of the future. The system architecture provides expandable terabit-class multi-layer switching.

The AMN6400 platform is based on true Packet/Optical architecture, and includes optical layer ROADM/WSS and hybrid packet/OTN switching. The AMN6400 supports metro applications such as services aggregation and translation, and long-haul functions such as OTN switching, advanced ULH optics, and MPLS-TP features – all from a single platform. Initial versions of the AMN6400 platform will be available for evaluation in late 2009, with commercial availability in the second quarter, 2010.

According to Dr. Scott Wilkinson, Hitachi VP of Product Management and System Engineering, “The goal of the AMN6400 product development effort is to enable a ‘leap frog’ effect, in which the basic system architecture is optimized for native 100G and higher operation. This makes the AMN6400 the most advanced transport and switching platform available. The system offers the flexibility not only to accommodate the ever-increasing bandwidth requirements being generated by a wide variety of applications at all levels of the network, but also offers improved operational capabilities through increased integration of multiple functions into a single, centrally managed packet-based platform.”
