Osram Opto Semiconductors Develops Miniature ChipLed for Low-Profile Optical Touch Screens

A subsidiary of Osram, Osram Opto Semiconductors based in Germany has developed the SFH 4053, a ChipLED of small dimensions which has been designed for low profile laptop and computer displays.

Additionally the infrared emitters are so small, that it allows for easy integration with smartphones.

The Product Marketing Manager of the company, Bianka Schnabel explained that in optical touch screens, the basic infrared emitters and detectors housed in a low profile frame form a grid of horizontal and vertical beams of light when touched. In order to overcome the reflection or shadow issue in devices such as laptops and tablet PCs, smaller detectors and infrared emitters are required.

The SFH 4053 ChipLED measures 0.5mm x 1mm and is extremely compact. The height of the ChipLED is only 0.45 mm. The high light output of the ChipLED plays an important role in the display setup of camera touch screens. It requires fewer infrared emitters since the high output could cause a flood of infrared light from both corners of the display. The SFH 4053 is a high efficiency infrared emitter which works on an operating current of only 70mA. In the pulse mode, the ChipLED can achieve 260mW from an operating power of 700mA.

Schnabel added that the SFH 4053 emits enough light to make it economic and easy to expand the touch screen systems of the camera to larger screens.
