Massachusetts-based manufacturer, Luminus Devices announced that the Luminus Big Chip LED CBM-380 powered Philips Vari-Lite VLX Wash luminaires have been recently installed at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House.
Placed in a replacement lighting rig which was installed in place of a damaged rig, the luminaries add usage flexibility to adapt to a range of TV broadcasts and stage performances.
The lighting director at the Grand Ole Opry House, Tyler Bryan stated that when the team began conceptualizing on the fixtures to be placed in the rig, a demo provided earlier on the VLX Wash seemed to provide the solution. Bryan added that the decision was made due to the lasting impression made by the VLX Wash’s color and color-mixing. Coupled with the fact that the system requires minimal maintenance, the decision was made to use the VLX as the primary wash.
The VLX Wash was preferred due to the vivid deep colors emitted by the LED source which made it easy to achieve special effects and increased dependability and effectiveness. Apart from the true LED white, the VLX can flash between numerous colors in the fraction of a second.
The head electrician for the Broadway production American Idiot, Eric Abbott stated that the lighting rig is at work nearly 40 hours every week and a total of around 1920 hours every year. A typical Broadway rig fitted with a normal wash fixture required maintenance at least once or twice in a month, but since the shift was made to VLX Wash, no maintenance issues cropped up for nine months. The reason for this was attributed to the fact that due to the lack of a bulb, the heat generated is less than typical moving lights.
The CBM-380 chip designed by Luminus is also used by Philips in other fixtures such as the VARI-LITE VLX3 Wash Luminaire, Selecon PL1 and Selecon PL3.
