DisplaySearch, a global market research firm dealing in photovoltaic/solar cell industries and display supply chain, has released its Quarterly LED Supply/Demand Market Forecast Report.
The report analyzes the supply and demand of the LED industry, focusing on lighting and backlight applications, chip prices, technology, supply chain and LED maker roadmaps.
According to the report, the LED demand for TV applications is expected to dominate the market through 2013 and will secure the lead by 2014.
LED backlights are currently used in small and medium LCDs, and LEDs are used in LCD monitors, TVs and mobile PCs. While penetration has increased, the number of LED packages used per set is reducing, even though the cost per chip has decreased. However, the number of chips utilized for individual set in rising slowly and is anticipated to reach 15.1 in the 2012 year. Manufacturers are leveraging the technology for display applications such as TVs, monitors and notebooks, leading to increased demand for LED backlights.
The penetration rate of LED lighting is expected to grow from 1.4% in 2010 to 9.6% in 2014. Incentive programs from governments are also expected to fuel the demand for LED street lights and spotlights.
