ST Microelectronics Unveils LED Lamp Drivers with 800 V Power MOSFET

ST Microelectronics has launched a range of mains-operated LED lamp drivers for LED lighting within retrofit lamps that have primary-side current control.

The HVLED805 incorporates an 800 V avalanche-rugged MOSFET made possible by using the company’s high-voltage integration procedure. The high-voltage startup circuitry on chip ensures that the device starts smoothly when the AC voltage is connected to the lamp.

Primary-side control keeps the LED current constant. This ensures a consistent output of light and eliminates the need for opto-couplers and current-sensing parts. This reduced component count in turn leads to reduced overall costs and the size of the circuitry, enhancing overall efficiency and reducing current-detecting losses. The device uses PSR to ensure that the LED current control accuracy is within 5%. It does not need an opto-coupler in the secondary side, allowing for greater dependability and lowering the mean-time-between-failure of the light.

The 800 V power MOSFET reduces the snubber network. The efficient quasi-resonant (QR) operating mode also increases energy savings and minimizes the EMI filtering needed, making the end product both space and cost-efficient.
