GWCC Receives $2.3 Million Grant for Lighting Retrofit Upgrade

The Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) has received a $2.3 million stimulus grant for a lighting control upgrade and retrofit project. The GWCC obtained the grant from the U.S. Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The stimulus grant will facilitate the replacement of about 1,500 lights in 12 exhibit halls of the convention center. Upgrades will be done to the lighting control systems that enable separate adjustment and control.

The lighting project will help minimize energy consumption, maintenance and operation costs through sophisticated lighting controls and energy-saving lamps. The convention center has a yearly power bill of above $4 million and uses  over 20,000 light fixtures across the building.

The new lighting fixtures may create maximum savings of 25% and will have 20% longer operating life than existing bulbs. The replacement of lighting fixtures is scheduled to be completed by September 2011.
