Telekom Srbija and the Serbian Ministry have collaborated for leasing 4,000 km of fiber-optic cables for the SEELight project. The cables will connect scientific and educational institution in Southeastern Europe. Jasna Matic, the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society, made the announcement regarding the fiber project in the region.
Under the agreement, Telekom Srbija will rent optical cables for the next 15 years. Matic stated that the optical fiber network will connect more than 180 research and scientific institutions and 50 towns. She added that the company would aid in connecting the academic networks in the nearby states. The optical cable lease will enhance the education in Serbia, Matic said. She continued that the Hellenic Plan has financed the majority of the SEELight project.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Secretary General for International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation, Constantine Papadopoulos remarked that the SEELight project covers the regions, namely, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Papadopoulos added that the optical fiber project would aid in minimizing the digital gap between the developed European countries and Southeastern European countries.
