APM Terminals is implementing APS Technology Group’s Automated Gate System at the Apapa terminal in Nigeria, for streamlining the exit and entry of traffic in more than 18 lanes. APS is a supplier of optical character recognition (OCR) technology solutions for intermodal and marine terminals.

The APS gate system includes a biometric security system for registering and validating the drivers at entry and exit. It also incorporates 18 driver kiosks with access control barriers, and four OCR and damage inspection gateways.

The Apapa terminal in Nigeria is the biggest container terminal of West Africa. The automated gate system is the first solution to be implemented in any of the West African terminals.

APM Terminals, known to be proactive in adopting technology, won the 2010 Safety at Sea International Award, in the Management and Operations division. The President of APS Technology, Russ Scheppmann commented that the company is delighted to be selected by APM for this project.
