Alcon Introduces New Intraocular Lens for Patients with Astigmatism

The eye care company, Alcon has rolled out the new AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal Toric IOL (intraocular lens) outside the US. Alcon launched the IOL at the 2010 European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons annual meet in Paris.

The new IOL is developed based on Alcon’s AcrySof platform. It offers a surgery option, which provides quality vision and more spectacle independence, for cataract patients having astigmatism. The IOL offers high-quality vision similar to that of the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D IOL. It integrates the AcrySof Toric’s accurate astigmatism correction with the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal Toric’s multifocal performance.

The IOL completed its CE Mark in the second quarter of 2010. Alcon has planned to apply a Pre-Market Application for the IOL lens with the US FDA in 2012. The CEO and President of Alcon, Kevin Buehler stated that the IOL technology enables surgeons to provide their patients a lens that delivers high-quality vision at any distance.
