Researchers Use Rough Ultrathin Films to Achieve Efficient Light Absorption

A group of physicists from the University of Kaiserslautern, Bielefeld University and the University of Würzburg have shown that when light is efficiently scattered in rough, ultrathin films, it is completely absorbed.

Researchers Develop Optical Parametric Amplifier to Improve OCM Imaging Performance in Scattering Media

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has emerged as an important in vivo imaging tool in modern biology an4d medicine. It enables large imaging depth as weak scattered light signals coming from structures deep inside light scattering tissues can be efficiently detected. Another advantage is its strong coherence gate (an effective time gate) resulting in high axial resolution and optical sectioning capability, and in addition, helping to reject multiply scattered background light.

New Laser Technique for Resolving Orbits of Multiple Molecular Orbitals

A scientist in a crisp, white lab coat and protective eye goggles sits behind a safety shield, controller in hand. In front of him is a powerful titanium-sapphire laser, aimed at a crystal lens. His thumb gently squeezes the trigger on the controller. There is an imperceivable wisp of gas that is escaping from a nozzle and crossing the laser’s path. Before he can even blink his eye the laser is capable of firing more than a trillion times. On the screen a line of alternating pairs of glowing, amorphous spots appear. For the first time ever, someone has been able to peer down into the molecular level to observe simultaneously in two dimensions.

Random Raman Lasing Emission Holds Promise for High-Speed Wide-Field Microscopy

In modern microscope imaging techniques, lasers are used as light sources because they can deliver fast pulsed and extremely high-intensity radiation to a target, allowing for rapid image acquisition. However, traditional lasers come with a significant disadvantage in that they produce images with blurred speckle patterns — a visual artifact that arises because of a property of traditional lasers called "high spatial coherence." These speckles greatly reduce image quality in wide-field microscopy, a common technique for making broad swath images of the whole side of a cell or some other part of the microscopic world in order to understand its intricate inner workings.
