Hitachi-LG has introduced a new, advanced optical storage drive called the HyDrive. The HyDrive combines both Blu-ray and solid-state drives (SSDs), and provides optimal space savings when used in ultraportable, tablet and netbook systems. Tablet and netbook producers can use the additional space to include a feature-packed device, or can reduce the size of the equipment accordingly.
The HyDrive incorporates a DVD burner, a 64 or 32 gigabyte SSD drive and a Blu-ray reader. The solid-state drive offers a sequential writes and reads of about 60 and 175 MB at each second, respectively.
Hitachi-LG claims that the HyDrive enhances system performance through application loading, PC shutdown and PC booting functions. Such improved performance is due to an internal solid-state drive that can function either as a single cache or as a combination of optical drive caching and data storage. A laptop equipped with the HyDrive can load the Windows 7 operating system in a shorter period of time, unlike traditional laptops.
The company will introduce the HyDrive in August 2010, and a 256 gigabyte model of the drive will be released in March 2011.
