Universal Display announced that it has been awarded a two-year program to help in the establishment of an OLED manufacturing facility in the U.S. The company won the contract together with Moser Baer Technologies.
The $4 million contract has been awarded as part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by the United States Department of Energy (DOE).
The awarded program is titled as “Creation of a U.S. Phosphorescent OLED Lighting Panel Manufacturing Facility.” As part of the program, Universal Display will showcase the measurability of its UniversalPHOLED materials and technology so that it can help produce white OLED lighting panels in line with commercial lighting requirements. Meanwhile, the design and construction of the pilot facility will be done by the U.S.-based Moser Baer Technologies, which is a unit of Moser Baer India.
The UniversalPHOLED technology has become a vital element for the manufacturing of OLED lighting products and displays. By using this technology, white PHOLEDs acquire the potential to considerably decrease power usage,, white lighting expenses, and environmental impacts.
By the year 2016, white OLEDs can help save about $20 billion from electricity costs and save carbon emissions of more than 9 million metric tons in the U.S., as per industry estimates. The President and CEO of Universal Display, Steven V. Abramson, said that the new program signifies an important step in establishing mass production in the U.S. for white OLED lighting panels. The combination of technologies from Universal Display and Moser Baer will offer a cost-effective way to produce energy-efficient white OLEDs in a large scale. This can bring in new investment and job opportunities in the country, he commented.
