Latest Innovations in Ophthalmic Devices to be Highlighted at SoCalBio

The Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio) will focus like an excimer laser on the latest innovations in ophthalmic devices during its "Trends in Ophthalmology" Forum on Thursday, April 29th (4:00 - 7:00 p.m.), at the UCLA Faculty Center.

The Forum will explore how ophthalmic device firms - led by several based in the Los Angeles/Orange County region - are poised to transform vision care with technologies ranging from retinal implants to miniaturized drug delivery devices.

"While it gets little attention in the local press, Southern California is regarded internationally as a hotbed for ophthalmic device R&D," said SoCalBio President Ahmed Enany. "We’ll have five of the industry’s top experts on-hand to discuss the trends affecting this very dynamic market segment."

Panelists will include:

  • Sean Caffey, MD, CEO, Replenish, Inc. (Pasadena)
  • Paul Dougherty, MD, Medical Director of Dougherty Laser Vision (Los Angeles) and Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute
  • Robert Greenberg, MD, PhD, President & CEO, Second Sight Medical Products (Sylmar)
  • Stacy Pritt, DVM, MS, MBA, CPIA, Director & General Manager, Biological Test Center (Irvine)
  • Chris Sandstedt, Ph.D., Director of Optics Research, Calhoun Vision (Pasadena)

According to GBI Research, the vision care and correction market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2.6% for the next seven years, and is expected to exceed $23 billion by 2016.

In addition to covering the latest technology, the April 29th Forum will address business-focused issues such as ophthalmic device reimbursement to direct-to-consumer marketing.
