Advanced Photonix, Inc. has announced that it has received a 2-year, $2.6 million contract from a leading military contractor who supplies missile tracking and imaging systems on a variety of Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) missile platforms.
The tube-launched, optically-tracked, wire-guided (TOW) missile is a crew portable, vehicle-mounted, heavy anti-armor weapon system consisting of a launcher and one of five versions of the TOW missile. It can be fired by infantrymen using a tripod, as well from vehicles and helicopters, and can launch 3 missiles in 90 seconds. It is primarily used in antitank warfare, and is a command to line of sight, wire-guided weapon. The system will operate in all weather conditions and on the "dirty" battlefield. After firing the missile, the gunner must keep the crosshairs of the sight centered on the target to ensure a hit.
Advanced Photonix has been supplying photodetector assemblies used in the guidance systems of various modules of the TOW missile- the Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS), the Improved Bradley Acquisition System (IBAS) and the TOW Visual Module, to leading military contractors for over ten years.
Commenting on the award, Adam Tabakian, Director of Sales for Advanced Photonix, said, "We are excited to receive this contract award. This award demonstrates our customers' trust in our engineering and manufacturing capabilities, as well as our ability to continually provide advanced technology to the US Military."
