APC Display Head Assembly Incorporates Incom's Light Columnation Fused Fiber Optic

Incom, the world's largest supplier of fused fiber optic solutions, and American Panel Corporation (APC), the premier supplier of display products for military applications, today unveiled the highest pixel density, full color display currently available for a military cockpit that includes "light spillage" mitigation.

The 5x5 inch, 1280x1280 resolution APC710HR Display Head Assembly (DHA), the first to approach "retina" pixel density at 256 pixels per inch in an aviation display, incorporates Incom's light columnation fused fiber optic; significantly reducing canopy reflections, while improving aviation performance and operator safety.

"Nearly all military tactical fast jet cockpits in the US, and many worldwide, include APC displays, as do multiple helicopters, armored vehicles and tanks," said Jamie Boulet, manager of business development for APC. "Incom's fused fiber optics enable APC to produce the military's only full color display of this size, with the highest pixel density, to incorporate 'light spillage' mitigation for an aviation cockpit. The APC710HR is ready for OEM and Tier 1 integrator adoption."

In order to meet all optical and video performance requirements under demanding environmental conditions, APC must be progressive with its material and design choices. Incom's fused fiber optic technology is a critical piece of manufacturing The APC710HR, enabling full performance across all environments, including high and low temperatures and various vibration and shock exposures. Combining these technologies together yields the most advanced, fully functioning display to enhance situational awareness and precision, and reduce risk in all situations.

"The bubble canopy demands that light from the display elements be steered within a very distinct and defined viewing cone to minimize reflections of primary and secondary light," explained Michael A. Detarando, CEO and president of Incom. "Incom's fused fiber optic faceplate extinguishes light outside of the specified viewing eye box, enabling the best optical performance currently available."

Incom's fused fiber optics revolutionize displays by seamlessly transferring images into places that traditional displays could never fit—e.g., into the knobs, buttons and controls on gaming, consumer/commercial automation, automotive, medical equipment and aviation consoles—at a fraction of what it would cost to design the display from scratch.
