STMicroelectronics, a worldwide provider of semiconductor and imaging technologies, recently declared that it has entered into a strategic agreement with a Grenoble, a France-based MicroOLED company that develops and distributes OLEDs. St also declared a minority equity investment of € 6 million in the company.
With unique resolution and maximum power efficiency, OLEDs can be adopted to micro-displays for serving a wide range of portable applications such as video goggles, medical and security applications, and camera viewfinders.
MicroOLED's advanced technology offers superior pixel density for improved image quality and also proves 50% more power efficiency than competitive displays. Based on this technology, OLEDs can now have two-fold pixel densities and 10 to 100x more contrast ratios than alternate displays. By integrating these technology advantages, ST offers exceptional manufacturing machine, deep IP portfolio, and broad consumer-market expertise with production and supply services for new micro-displays, thereby benefiting a wide range of customers and applications with advanced technology.
ST’s fully integrated CMOS processes foster the development of a comprehensive product roadmap. The extensive portfolio of design IP of ST has enabled the integration of micro-display functions on external controllers that pose complexity to the final solution. With expertise in designing for low-power, ST promotes applications like video goggles.
According to Eric Marcellin-Dibon, the CEO and cofounder of MicroOLED, the company’s strategic relationship with ST will promote improvement in the company’s strong manufacturing capabilities. With technology advancement and expansion of potential market, MicroOLED can better develop low-power micro-displays.
