NEC has declared that super- resolution technologies have been devised to enable fine magnification for images like license plates and faces of individuals from surveillance cameras.
In order to enhance the resolution of a subject and establish its magnification, present technologies demand several static images from a video. However, under 2x or 3x magnification, these images are unclear. Hence, technologies with improved resolution are required wherein images can be magnified with increased clarity.
With NEC's recent technologies, super-resolution image can be obtained from a single shot of a subject by using a library of classified images such as a car's license plate or an individual’s face. Thus images remain clear even when magnified by 4 times or more, which enables to differentiate small and distant objects that was not possible with previous technologies. Surveillance cameras anticipate implementing these technologies to focus large areas like traffic intersections and airports.
Significant features of this technology include, designing clear images under high magnification, wherein an image library is formed for subjects in order to enable super-resolution image processing. The library stores in itself images of varied resolutions from which selection can be made based on the requirements. Another feature includes a library of data for small size images.
Looking forward, NEC intends to expand the application of these technologies to a wide range of perspectives such as the development of medical and satellite images, as the company progresses with the improvement of technologies that will promote safe and secure well-being.
