SpectraScience to Launch Redesigned WavSTAT 4 Optical Biopsy System in Europe

US-based medical device company SpectraScience will launch its WavSTAT 4 Optical Biopsy System that has been redesigned, in the European market.

The system that is aimed at the diagnosis of colon cancer will be launched at the European Gastroenterology Week which is to be held at Stockholm from October 22 to 26 2011.

The WavSTAT 4 biopsy system is used as an auxiliary to the current endoscopic methods for diagnosis. During the standard colorectal screening, the biopsy system can give an in vivo diagnosis of the potential cancer tissue within a second. The WavSTAT 4 displays the results in a binary format where a red dot indicates a cancer tissue and a green dot indicates a normal tissue. The new version of the WavSTAT 4 has a new user friendly interface and has additional features that are aimed at making it easy to use and suitable for clinics. The system also comprises of a linear discriminate analysis algorithm that eliminates the possibility of error messages by sensing the cancerous tissue more effectively. According to Michael Oliver, Chief Executive Officer of SpectraScience, the sale of the biopsy system in Europe marks the company‘s plans to move into commercial production from scientific development. He also added that the European Gastroenterology Week is the ideal platform for the product’s launch.

The European Gastroenterology Week is the most prestigious GI meeting that is held in Europe. This event has been conducted from 1992 and focuses on featuring technical advancements in clinical management, original research programs in GI and liver diseases and breakthroughs in basic science and translational science researches.
