Semtech, an analog and mixed-signal semiconductors provider, released the first product in a series of phase-shifted LED drivers.
The novel device SC5010 is a white, eight-channel LED driver with a creative PWM dimming, phase-shift control, incorporating extremely low-profile inductors, thereby permitting LED drivers to be in-built in the LCD panel in ultra-mobile PCs (UMPC) and ultrabook PCs, for displays of 4mm thickness. It ensures longer battery life with extremely thin LCD displays, in automotive, tablet, and other different medium-size display solutions.
The SC5010 offers higher efficiency when utilizing similar size inductors as present phase-shifted LED drivers and can function with inductors of size 10 times lesser and yet maintain a high level of efficiency The advanced control loop architecture permits the usage of tiny inductors sized 2.2µH or 1mm height. The phase-shifted technology in the SC5010 decreases the need for input and output capacitance providing high efficiency of traditional non-phase shifted switching regulators, less EMI (electromagnetic interference), with considerably lesser noise, and without any noise filtering components.
The device is an eight-channel boost LED driver that can drive up to 112 LEDs at 30mA per channel, enabling programmable switching frequencies as rapid as 2.2MHz and is important to enable phase-shifted dimming with the use of tiny, low-profile inductors.
Semtech’s creative loop architecture arrests display flicker and shutdown due to line transients occurring in automotive applications.
The SC5010 LED driver features flexibility of three PWM dimming control and I2C modes, a dimming frequency range from 100Hz to 30 kHz, an extensive PWM input dimming range of 5000:1 at 200Hz, 5-bit analog dimming register that can be operated along with PWM to obtain higher dimming resolution, and a customisable 9- or 10-bit dimming resolution.
The SC5010 provides precise backlight, temperature, color, and an even brightness over the display ensuring accuracy of +/-1.5%, and +/-1% channel-to-channel current matching.
The SC5010 finds applications in LCD backlighting, in LCD monitor applications, including automotive solutions such as seatback infotainment, audio/video module, instrument cluster, and in consumer electronics such as LCD display backlight, notebook PC, ultra-mobile PC, and Tablet PC.
