The market intelligence service provider, MarketResearch.com has released the semiconductor market report titled, 2011 Optoelectronics.
A rapidly growing semiconductor market segment, optoelectronics is being introduced to several new end markets. The development and growth of optoelectronics components such as image sensors and LEDs has predominantly risen out of the growing demand for energy efficient semiconductor products.
The report predicts that optoelectronics segment will continue to be the fifth largest semiconductor market; following microprocessors, analog, logic and memory in terms of global sales. The revenue for 2011 for the optoelectronics segment is projected at $22.5 billion. Unit shipments and sales of optoelectronic components are likely to rise as the demand for OLEDs and LEDs in various applications such as general lighting and television displays continues to surge. The segment is also likely to witness an annual sales growth of 14% accounting for 8% of the semiconductor industry market share.
Within the segment, high brightness white LEDs, Organic LEDs and other LEDs will continue to remain the fastest and largest growing product with sales worth $8.4 billion globally. Analysts predict that in the next five years, LED sales will rise at an annual rate of 18%. The leading suppliers in the LED market include suppliers such as Cree, BetaLED, Philips and Lighting Science Group. Second to LEDs in the segment are image sensors due to the growing demand for CMOS sensor technology, which finds its application in camera phones.
