Manufacturer of energy-efficient luminaires and lighting control systems, Acuity Brands has announced that the Lithonia Lighting RTLED luminaire was used in Virginia Commonwealth University’s lighting renovation project. The award-winning luminaire was installed as the primary fixture at the Division for Health Science Diversity and the Office of Special Services for Students.
A volumetric recessed, high-quality luminaire, the RTLED generates uniform white ambient light at reduced maintenance costs and energy consumption. The luminaire features a powerful LED light engine and has a system life of about 50,000 hrs. It also features an interface to the Sensor Switch portfolio of control systems and sensors, a complete range of dimming facility with 0-10 v DC control, 3500 K color temperature and high color (80+CRI) color rendering.
The initial plan of the university to upgrade the ballasts and lamps was modified to complete the lighting renovation after an analysis revealed that it would be a more energy-efficient and cost effective solution. Hurd & Obenchain was given the task of determining the viability of the LED ambient lighting in an effort to further decrease maintenance costs and energy usage.
An electrical engineer at the firm, Chad Nixon stated that a decision was made to evaluate The RTLED solution by Acuity Brands based on Hurd & Obenchain’s prior experience with the company’s Lithonia Lighting RT5 for general ambient and office and lighting. Nixon added that the energy efficiency of the RT5 fluorescent luminaire enabled the team to fulfill the watts per square foot requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) while preserving high foot candle levels. Since the RTLED comes with an LED light source and is based on the same volumetric lighting technology as the RT5, it was considered for the renovation project.
