The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will soon bring 'fibre to the home' (FTTH) services within the city.
The 'gigabit-capable passive optical network' (GPON) will deliver high-speed broadband services to its clients. BSNL is conducting several technical tests to introduce GPON and the optical network is anticipated to function within a month.
An official stated that the GPON services will be delivered using optical fibre cables that renders high speed uploading and downloading capacity. He added that clients will enjoy high internet speed as compared with the previous broadband speeds.
The existing broadband service is offered using copper cables, while the GPON will utilize fibre cables. The service will be rendered with a dedicated modem featuring four ports. Two ports out of four will deliver high speed internet, VOIP, and IPTV services.
BSNL is taking initiative to equip each exchange with the ability to deliver FTTH service using GPON, except for new locations within the city.
BSNL has a broadband client base of 1.20 lakhs in the city. The strength of the broadband network will be increased if the PCMC and PMC give permission to dig roads for the laying of cables. According to the BSNL, Pune is the first city to have FTTH services using GPON.
