Cognex proclaimed that Kiva Systems, supplier of warehouse automation solutions, has placed an order for 140 units of Cognex’s latest DataMan 500 barcode readers. Kiva Systems will incorporate the barcode readers into an automated order fulfillment system, which is being developed for a major medical equipment producer.
The image-based DataMan 500 systems will monitor the packaging operations to assure that appropriate items are delivered to the correct destination. This will be achieved by reading the barcodes on product packaging and gathering data for instantaneous inventory management. The systems can easily read even degraded printed barcodes when compared to conventional barcode readers based on laser technology.
The DataMan 500 integrates economical and user-friendly laser scanners with ultra-performance image-based readers. It can read 1-D barcodes, including codes that are printed in random orientation, low contrast, low height, scratched, blurred, distorted and damaged.
In contrast to laser-based barcode readers, the image-based barcode reader can also read the latest 2-D codes, including QR codes and Data Matrix, and can concurrently read different codes that are in the single image. It offers high durability and requires less maintenance as it has no moving components to wear out.
Cognex’ Chairman, Robert J. Shillman stated that the DataMan 500 can be used to scan packages containing up to seven different barcodes in a single view when compared to numerous views of laser-based scanners, resulting in high handling efficacy and throughput
