U.S. Navy and UC Davis to Produce Energy-Efficient Lighting Systems

The U.S. Navy announced that it has signed an agreement with the University of California Davis in order to reduce energy utilization for outdoor lighting purposes.

Navy’s Assistant Secretary for energy, installations and environment, Jackalyne Pfannenstiel and UC Davis provost Ralph Hexter, inked the memorandum of agreement (MOU) at the California Lighting Technology Center.

The agreement will enable both parties to work together on energy-efficient lighting solutions. The University of California Davis will explore methods for the Navy to utilize less energy and obtain more energy from renewable sources such as wind and sun. The university will also help the Navy in other regions of energy technology such as generating alternative energy sources for Navy aircraft, vessels, and vehicles.

The lighting center is already testing the lighting solutions at the Beale Air Force Base, California National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters, and Naval Base San Diego. The U.S. Navy aspires to obtain half of the energy it utilizes from non-fossil fuel sources by 2020.
