Northrop Grumman Delivers 2,000th Viper Laser to U.S. Navy Program

Global security company, Northrop Grumman has delivered its 2,000th Viper laser system to the US Navy ahead-of-schedule. The laser offers the jamming energy for the infrared countermeasures (IRCM) applications.

The Viper compact, multi-band laser consumes less power from the aircraft and offers the required jamming power output to safeguard fast jets, huge transport aircraft and rotary-wing aircraft. All components of the Viper can be fitted in chassis measuring 13’’ in diameter and 2’’ in height.

The Department of the Navy Large Aircraft IRCM (DoN LAIRCM) system used on the US Marine Corps helicopters offers protection to aircraft and aircrews from the threat of missiles. The IRCM system operates by sensing a missile launch automatically. If the missile poses a threat to the aircraft, it will  activate a laser-based, high-power countermeasure system to detect and destroy the missile.
