UnisonFibre, telecommunication business of Unison Network, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deliver devices for the fiber-optic broadband network in Taupo, Rotorua and Hawke's Bay regions in New Zealand. UnisonFibre is likely to have 130 km of functional fiber by the end of October 2010.
The fiber-optic network will allow connections in various speeds, from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The NZ Government also plans to invest a maximum of $1.5 billion on high-speed broadband deployment.
UnisonFibre was offering an open access fiber-optic network that initially linked the electricity assets of Unison Network. UnisonFibre entered into a formal agreement with Alcatel-Lucent after trialing the company’s devices numerous times.
The Sales and Marketing Manager of UnisonFibre, Wayne Baird stated that the company was focused on linking health providers, schools, and businesses with the fiber-optic network. Baird further informed that the company’s fiber-optic network project is separate from the New Zealand Government’s project. The high-speed broadband services had made a big difference to businesses, and the fiber-optic network also removed the barrier that barred certain businesses from moving into regional areas.
