Maryland to Use Stimulus Funding to Deploy Fiber-Optic Cable

The State of Maryland will deploy over 1,200 miles of fiber-optic network cable in the forthcoming three years. Maryland will utilize the $115 million it received in stimulus funding, to deploy the fiber-optic cable.

The fiber-optic cable will connect the present broadband network, and utilize the investment from private parties. This private investment is likely to give access to high-speed Internet service to 443,000 businesses, and 2 million homes.

Martin O’Malley, the Governor of Maryland stated that the fiber-optic cable would lead the way for high-speed Internet services in the future, and also strengthen the small business community, enhance the company’s capability to offer public safety services, generate jobs, and expand the economic opportunities, in the state.

O’Malley added that deploying the fiber-optic cables throughout the 23 counties and the city would generate 2,000 construction jobs in the forthcoming three years. The new fiber-optic lines will link over 2,000 miles of fiber already laid in Maryland.
