US researchers have designed a new laser backpack system that creates a comprehensive and precise 3D map of spaces. The backpack system can be carried indoors and is equipped with inertial sensors, lasers and cameras.
The laser backpack could be utilized to produce precise 3D models of underground tunnel complexes or buildings that are hard to map with satellite navigation tool. Satellite navigation signals cannot enter into underground or indoor spaces.
Dr Avideh Zakor, project’s lead engineer, stated that the team has devised new sensor fusion algorithms, which utilize inertial measurement units, lasers range finders and cameras to produce a photo-realistic, textured three-dimensional model. The 3D model can function without using a global positioning system (GPS) input, Zakor said.
Dr Jon Sjogren from the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research remarked that Professor Zakhor strives to overcome such challenges and has contributed significantly by developing the laser backpack system.
The Air Force Office of Scientific Research had funded the project.
