Birmingham to Use Indal’s Stela Luminaire for LED Streetlight Program

The city of Birmingham, United Kingdom, will begin installing more than 41,000 LED streetlights in September 2010. The Birmingham City Council will supervise the installation of the streetlights over the following five years.

Stela LED Lighting

The Birmingham City Council has arranged for a private finance initiative with Amey, a public service provider, for upgradation and maintenance of the road network of the city for the coming 25 years. The existing lighting stock of the city is mainly low pressure sodium and high pressure sodium (SON).

From 2010 September, streetlights in all residential regions will be upgraded to LED. Initially, traffic routes will be upgraded to SON, and then will be upgraded to LED fixtures subsequently. All of the tunnel lighting fixtures will also be changed to LED.

The Stela luminaire, which was developed by Indal, has been chosen for the LED upgradation. The luminaire incorporates CREE LEDs, and it will help in reducing carbon emissions and consumption of energy. These dimmable streetlights offer good optical control, enabling reduction of obtrusive light and light pollution. The Dimming feature of the LED fixtures can decrease Birmingham’s electricity consumption of streetlights by a maximum of 40%.
