Provider of wireline and wireless communication services, Verizon has delivered about 1Gbps bandwidth in a field trial held in Taunton. The bandwidth was delivered on an existing GPON (gigabit passive optical network) in a FiOS network setting.
This capacity will provide the company the potential to accommodate broad array of new business and consumer services such as remote storage, desktop virtualization, and 3DTV.
The GPON platform of Verizon supports 1.2 Gbps upstream and 2.4 Gbps downstream total throughput for customers linked to the PON. The field trial was performed using Motorola’s GPON system. Motorola supplies both GPON and BPON equipment to Verizon. The trial involved providing a new fiber-optic connection from a currently functioning GPON system at Verizon’s call-switching office in Taunton, to a second ONT (Optical Network Terminal), at the customer’s facility.
The second ONT was enabled for 1Gbps service tier, while the speed was tested on an optimized route to a local speed test server at 925 Mbps. The speed was also tested to a regional speed test server at 800 Mbps, over the public internet. The FiOS service did not show any degradation in the video, data or voice services at the time of the trial.
