Stray Light Launches New Street Light Featuring LUXIM's LEP Technology

At the California Lighting Technology Center's (CLTC) open house, held recently in Davis, Stray Light Optical Technologies introduced its new street light designed around LUXIM's award-winning Light Emitting Plasma™ (LEP) technology.

The luminaire—positioned prominently at the front of the lighting displays—is the first of Stray Light Optical's Tesla series, the company's portfolio of energy-efficient solutions for general lighting. The occasion marked the first public deployment of LUXIM's LEP technology for street light applications. The tic-tac-sized light source is already illuminating high-intensity applications like projection displays, medical instrumentation devices and entertainment spotlights, along with other general lighting applications.

The annual demonstration of lighting technologies is a key event on CLTC's calendar. The organization's mission is to stimulate, facilitate and accelerate the development and commercialization of energy-efficient lighting and daylighting technologies.

According to Gerald Rea, president of Stray Light Optical Technologies, "Parking fixtures, canopy fixtures, flood lights and a family of application-specific fixtures that leverage the benefits of the LEP sources will hit the market in the first half of this year."

At the event was LUXIM's vice president of sales, Geoff Brown. Brown explained that the new luminaire will reduce energy consumption by up to 50 percent. At today's power costs, this means an annual savings of approximately $145 per fixture. A project with 400 fixtures would save 209 tons of CO2 emissions per year—the equivalent of removing 29 cars from the road.

"When it comes to efficiency gains in the general lighting market, LUXIM continues to lead," said Brown. "Furthermore, our lumen package has increased by 40 percent in the last 12 months, with every five percent gain making the technology a perfect fit for more and more applications. When combined, the efficiency improvements, exceptional color quality and 50,000-hour life make LEP the best possible source for high-illuminance applications like streets, parking lots, big-box retailers, factories and distribution centers. Moreover, our tic-tac-sized plasma light source enables a new generation of compact, eco-friendly and cost-effective fixtures."

LUXIM products will next be on display at the Green Products Expo at the Marriott Marquis in New York City on Feb. 18th.
