GreenTouch Introduces Energy-Efficient Technology for FTTH Networks

GreenTouch, the global consortium intended in upgrading ICT networks, recently declared that it will demonstrate an innovative technology that will promote energy-efficiency in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks, and other applications.

Marked as the consortium’s second breakthrough, the Bit-Interleaved Passive Optical Network (Bi-PON) technology is a high performance innovation that is capable of facilitating power reduction of 30 times over existing technologies, thereby minimizing cost.

Bi-PON is an advanced solution in passive optical network (PON) technologies. With growing demand for 40GPON systems for electronic processing establishment, Bi-PON will become inevitable. Almost 99% of all processed data are being discarded by existing optical network units in access. In contrast, Bi-PON, based on a selective data processing technique with energy-efficient capabilities, simplifies the electronic circuitry.

Two innovative technologies have been developed and demonstrated by GreenTouch; the Large-Scale Antenna System and the Bi-PON technology. By combining both the technologies, over 25% of energy efficiency can be achieved. GreenTouch is progressing with new demonstrations that will enable the consortium to create technologies that will render ICT networks to be 1,000 times more efficient. A thousand-fold reduction will be equal to powering communications networks such as internet for a period of three years.

Both Bi-PON and the Large-Scale Antenna System of GreenTouch will be showcased at TIA 2012, in the Green ICT Pavilion of Dallas, Texas, scheduled to take place from June 5 to 7, 2012.

The demonstration includes live video traffic display, through two separate networks such as a Bi-PON-enabled network and a standard optical network, both linked to a power meter to calculate the power usage.
