LightCounting has released a market update report on optical communications industry. The analysis is based on confidential sales information given by 23 vendors in the optical communications market.
According to the report, the worldwide sales of optical interface modules utilized in datacom and telecom networks were over $2.5 billion in 2010, which was an increase of 30% from the previous year. The reason is attributed increased sales of 10-Gbps SFP+ and Dense wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical interface modules such as 40-Gbps and 100-Gbps modules.
The wavelength-selective switch (WSS) modules utilized in tunable lasers and Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) also experienced a strong revenue growth of 14% and 34%, respectively, in 2010.
The datacom market revival was commenced in the H1 of 2009, with rapid sales of Fibre Channel and Ethernet transceivers at 30% and 10%, respectively. The sales of these products experienced a slow down in the second quarter of 2010, but picked up again in the H1 of 2010. Latest products such as 8-Gbps transceivers and 10 GB Ethernet were also posted a sales growth of 60% in 2010, driven by the robust sales of short-reach SFP+ modules.
The sales of DWDM and SONET/SDH optical interface modules were normal in the beginning of the revival period, but achieved growth in the H1 of 2010. According to the report, the DWDM market sector delivered a sales growth of 40% in 2010, driven by strong sales of 40-Gbps DQPSK and DPSK modules, and tunable 10-Gbps XFP and fixed-wavelength transceivers. The sales growth of SONET/SDH transceivers was 30% in 2010, mainly because of the outstanding sales growth of 160% of short-reach OC-768 modules.
