Taiwan-based display panel manufacturer, Wintek has started manufacturing active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays to leverage the higher-end market. The AMOLED displays are utilized in smartphones.
Various display panel manufacturers, such as Chimei Innolux, AU Optronics, LG, and Samsung have begun developing AMOLED displays, because of the increasing market for smartphones. AU Optronics fully acquired a subsidiary of Toshiba Mobile Display located in Singapore, and established production facilities for manufacturing AMOLED displays.
With Samsung and HTC on the client lists, Wintek has reactivated the manufacturing units owned by the reinvested company, Windell, to utilize the AMOLED display market. Windell, a developer of OLEDs, was merged with Wintek a few years back, because of technological bottlenecks. Sources stated that Wintek has also planned to form a partnership to initiate volume production units for AMOLED. The success of the Apple iPad is anticipated to activate tough competition among PC brands, thus profiting Wintek.
