Philips Research’s scientists have developed the world’s first white-light OLED module that can be plugged directly into a mains wall socket. The OLED prototype may help create new OLED systems that can eliminate the use of large power management circuitry.
The module will also help reduce material costs and streamline the light design of upcoming OLED-based systems for general lighting applications.
The white-light OLED module is powered by an alternating current source. Philips has designed the OLED module in partnership with Dipl.-Phys. Holger Spahr, Institut für Hochfrequenztechnik, Germany. The OLED module was developed as part of the TOPAS 2012 project, which was financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project provides a platform for major academic and industrial organizations to develop OLEDs for future lighting systems.
Philips has a wide range of DC-driven OLEDs in the Lumiblade series. The flat, thin nature of OLEDs allows the production of light sources in various sizes and shapes.
