France Telecom-Orange and the Lower Indian Ocean Network (LION2) consortium members have signed an agreement to deliver fiber-optic broadband. The LION will deliver the capabilities of broadband to Kenya through the island of Mayotte.
The project will allow the expansion of the submarine fiber cable connecting Mauritius and Madagascar to Asia and the African mainland. For the first time, the 3,000 kilometre-long cable will carry broadband internet to the region of Mayotte. The service quality of the fiber cable will be on par with the service offered in Europe.
The first phase of the fiber cable was recently introduced live and soon the second phase of the project will commence. The project is scheduled to complete in the first six months of 2012 with the launch of services.
France Telecom-Orange announced that LION2 is a significant project for Kenya to enhance its connectivity to the global networks and to meet the capacity needs of the future.
