Main One announced that its fiber-optic broadband cable has gone live in West Africa. The cable is possessed by Main One Cable Company Mauritius, which plans to develop a global telecommunication highway between Africa and other parts of the world through Portugal.
This map shows the Main One undersea fibre-optic cable, which extended to Lagos, Nigeria, bringing vastly greater communications capacity to West Africa.
Main One is set to be the preferred bandwidth provider in Ghana and Nigeria, after securing first fiber-optic cable licenses in these countries. Adekoyejo Abiola of Main One stated that installing the fiber-optic cable in the populous West African region was a benchmark for the company. The company has signed up nine clients after unveiling the product on July 21, 2010.
Abiola stated that the installation of the fiber-optic cables paved way for various opportunities in West Africa. The low cost of the broadband cables would help in offering cheaper downstream services for consumers. He further commented that the broadband capacity in South Africa would exponentially increase, when the cable reaches the country.
